Beowulf vs. Modern Day Superhero

Beowulf vs. Modern Day Superhero

“It’s a bird… it’s a plane… no! It’s Superman! ” When people say a modern day superhero, the names “Spiderman”, “Superman”, and “Catwoman” flash into mind. However, we forget about one of the most influential superheroes of today’s time; a soldier. Despite the differences, there are many similarities between Beowulf and a soldier because the two have more in common than we realize. As much as two great humans could have so much in common, Beowulf and a soldier have differences as most people in life do.

These include the fact that soldiers are paid for their services, whereas Beowulf battles for his people without a fee. However, in all due respect, most soldiers in the United States fight for our country because they are passionate, patriotic, and feel that they have a fighting cause. But the mere fact is that they are paid, whereas Beowulf is not. Another difference is that soldiers are sent through training and boot camp in order to achieve the proper skills and strength in order to become the best that they can be.

On the other-hand, Beowulf does not train for strength or skill. Therefore lastly, the main difference is the obvious fact that Beowulf could be considered superhuman due to his abnormal strength and talent, whereas a soldier is simply just a human. For example, Beowulf was said to lift Grendel’s mighty head, which was twice his size, out of the water without struggle. Soldiers are strong and tough like Beowulf, but in all honesty, they do not have super strength, as does Beowulf.

These are only a few differences, which can be tied together as similarities due to dedication and hard work of both. Beowulf and soldiers are putting their life on the line, fighting for a good cause, protecting their people and working for a good cause. In the epic story Beowulf is fighting to destroy the monster that is eating all of Hrothgars men in the mead hall. Beowulf defeats the monster and seeks all other monsters that try to promote evil and do evil things.

The soldiers do the same as they try to defeat the enemy, promote goodness, and stop the suffering of other people that do or do not deserver having the suffering that they are receiving. After September 11, 2001, war is our modern day monster that we need to try to avoid in which the soldiers also are trying to promote peace. Because of their heroic efforts, both of the heroes are shown respect and honor for the people around them. After Beowulf destroys the monster he gets a boat load of treasure to bring back to his people; and after his death people paid honor and respect to him.

The soldiers get rewards for helping out such as money for joining, college education paid, healthcare and better job opportunities With all of these similarities and differences presented, one can see how alike as well as different these two characters can be. Stated earlier, the differences seem to tie in with the similarities. For example, as the soldiers are getting paid and Beowulf is not, they both have the strong sense of determination, making them both similar and different.

In my opinion, Beowulf is the greater superhero. Not because I dislike soldiers, but because Beowulf is stronger and it is a given that he does not do it for a reward. Both are great superheroes, but Beowulf has more positives. Beowulf and the soldiers in the army are altruistic because they always put the needs of others before their own. Beowulf’s whole reason for coming to Herot was to help the people against Grendel. He even stayed to defeat Grendel’s mother and the fire dragon.

Beowulf shows physical strength in the story by defeating Grendel. He also shows courage in all of his battles. His intelligence is far above any others and used the sword made by the giants to kill Grendel’s mother. As I stated earlier that Beowulf and soldiers are alike because they are both putting their life on the line, fighting for a good cause, and they are trying to protect people, while doing the right thing. They are special in the way that soldiers get paid with money and respect; but Beowulf only gets paid with respect.
